Grounded, Not Generated: AI Now In IMPLAN
Economic impact modeling is a valuable tool, but it can come with a learning curve. As more organizations handle economic analysis themselves, this expertise has become a hurdle, often making it hard to even begin.
This is where IMPLAN is putting its AI efforts. Instead of adding AI just to follow trends, IMPLAN has created a set of features called IMPLAN Intelligence. These tools make economic impact modeling practical for any team, even if no one is an economics expert, while still delivering reliable and defensible results. In a recent webinar, Senior Product Manager Daniel Dewar and CEO Justin Helmig explained what’s available now. Here’s an overview.
A Deliberate Approach: Help Over Hype
Before talking about features, it’s important to share the philosophy. IMPLAN’s main value remains the same: delivering high-quality, reliable results, whether or not AI is involved. What AI brings to IMPLAN is broader access and efficiency.
“Every model behind IMPLAN is built the way it’s always been built, and that part doesn’t change,” said Justin Helmig, CEO of IMPLAN. “What changes is who can get value out of it. Most of the friction in economic impact modeling isn’t the math; it’s knowing how to ask the question and interpret the answer, and that’s exactly what IMPLAN Intelligence improves. For organizations bringing IMPLAN in-house, this improves the value they get from IMPLAN on day one.”
Three main principles guide this work. First, data security is essential: IMPLAN uses private hosting and never trains on customer data. Second, all AI features are opt-in through the User Profile page and clearly marked, so you remain in control. Third, every result runs through IMPLAN’s structural input-output models and traces back to source, so an AI-drafted answer carries the same authority as one built by hand in IMPLAN Cloud.
AI Connect: The Trusted Economic Intelligence Layer for AI
The main new feature is AI Connect, IMPLAN’s MCP Server, which brings top-quality economic impact analytics to AI agents. This is the best example of how IMPLAN Intelligence makes access easier. You can connect your own Claude account and ask economic questions in plain language. You’ll get IMPLAN-level results you can confidently present to a board, city council, or Congress, without needing to be an expert.
An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server is essentially a structured knowledge base that tells AI agents how to work with an API; IMPLAN’s has the support knowledge base and API documentation baked in. Setup is a secure, one-click connection scoped to your license, with no integration project and no custom code.
What makes AI Connect’s results grounded is that they’re based on real data, not just generated. Every number comes from IMPLAN’s structural models and a dataset of 50 billion data points from 120 sources. This means you get full traceability and no guesswork. All requests go straight through IMPLAN’s model, so results are reliable, and every project is available in the web application.
In the webinar demo, just one prompt describing a distribution center’s revenue and headcount in a specific congressional district was enough for AI Connect to find the right data, focus on the region, build the project, run the analysis, and deliver results in the needed format, whether that’s a one-pager, slide deck, or full report, all within the AI tool. The same process can handle large spreadsheets of business purchases across all 51 states or turn ongoing projects into clear reports and tables on demand. Tasks that once needed expertise now happen in plain language. Every project AI Connect creates is saved in the IMPLAN Cloud. For security, AI Connect uses pass-through authentication, so you connect with your own Claude account, and your credentials are never stored.
AI Summary: Framing Your Results for Any Audience
Now available in the IMPLAN Cloud web application, AI Summary creates custom summaries from your analysis results for different audiences. Whether you’re talking to a municipality focused on tax revenue, an executive team, or a community group, it makes interpreting results, often the hardest part for non-economists, much easier.
You can access AI Summary under the AI Summary menu in Project Results, as long as AI features are enabled in your profile. It focuses on key economic indicators and tax results, so every summary is based on reliable data. The model is privately hosted, and customer data is never used for training or shared with public models. AI can change the tone and depth to strengthen your narrative, but the numbers always match your model’s calculations.
In practice, you can request a more detailed version, a shorter summary, or a rewrite that highlights tax outcomes for a specific audience. You can also give feedback using the built-in tool and export the final summary to Word, with more formats coming soon. Recent updates have expanded support to Green Energy guided projects in the US, non-guided projects in International and Canada regions, and added more detailed breakdowns for projects covering multiple years.
AI Conversational Analytics: Talk to Your Data Library
Finally, the IMPLAN Data Library is also becoming easier to use. With AI Conversational Analytics, you can ask questions in plain language and get direct answers, without needing any dashboard experience.
Using filters in the Data Library can be challenging when you’re looking for specific information, and IMPLAN Intelligence is designed to make this easier. With AI Conversational Analytics, you just ask for what you need and get a table and a clear summary. You can also request line or bar charts and adjust them with simple text commands.
The Data Library has used Looker for a long time, and new support for plain-text queries through Google’s Gemini allowed IMPLAN to add this feature quickly. AI Conversational Analytics is available as part of the Data Library add-on and starts with industry data. It’s a more user-friendly option than the Industry Compare dashboard, with more data areas coming soon. Like all IMPLAN AI features, the model is privately hosted, and customer queries are never used for training.
Putting IMPLAN Intelligence to Work
All these features make it easier and faster to get reliable economic answers, and they make those answers available to more people, without losing the quality IMPLAN is known for. Data mapping, project creation, and reporting that once took several steps or coding can now be done in plain language. If you’re just starting out, AI Summary or AI Conversational Analytics are simple ways to begin. Just enable AI features in your profile and use it for your next analysis. To learn more about AI Connect, you can schedule a demo with examples and data tailored to your needs.
For 50 years, thousands of organizations have trusted IMPLAN. It combines results your stakeholders already know with AI tools that keep those results reliable and accessible to more of your team. That’s what sets grounded results apart from generated ones.
