Frequently Asked Questions

What is IMPLAN?

IMPLAN is the world’s most trusted economic impact modeling software. We enable users to conduct analyses via multi-regional input-output modeling. IMPLAN combines detailed economic, demographic, and industry data with a powerful cloud application, making it possible to simulate how economic changes ripple through a local, state, or national economy. IMPLAN allows you to calculate your impact through the entire supply chain while also helping you show how employees’ paychecks circulate back into the local economy. You can use your findings for promoting new projects, promoting your business as a whole, influencing legislation, determining where to expand your business, and so much more.

What does “IMPLAN” stand for?

IMPLAN stands for IMpact Analysis for PLANning. You can learn more about IMPLAN’s origins on our History page.

What is IMPLAN used for?

IMPLAN is used for:

  • Estimating the economic impact of projects, policies, or events on regional economies
  • Conducting “contribution” or “footprint” analyses (e.g. what share of a region’s economy is tied to a sector)
  • Modeling direct, indirect, and induced effects of changes (jobs, output, income, taxes)
  • Comparing scenarios
  • Supporting economic development strategy, cost-benefit planning, grant justification, policy evaluation, environmental-economic tradeoffs, etc.
How does IMPLAN work?

IMPLAN uses input-output (I-O) modeling to map relationships between industries, households, and governments in an economy. Here are the basics:

  • You begin by specifying a shock or change (e.g. new investment, job change, industry output change) in a specific geography (county, state, custom region).
  • IMPLAN’s internal multipliers and regional data translate that shock into direct, indirect, and induced impacts (jobs, income, output, taxes)
  • “Indirect” effects capture upstream supply chain effects, while “induced” effects capture household spending from incomes earned.
  • You can inspect and adjust underlying assumptions or data inputs to incorporate local knowledge or overrides.

Is IMPLAN difficult to use?

You don’t need to be an economist to use IMPLAN. IMPLAN is designed to provide an intuitive interface and guided workflows. Most new users become proficient in performing standard impact studies in days to weeks — especially with IMPLAN’s training programs.
